MELISSA NAVARRE

WEATHERFORD MOM OF THE MONTH

Melissa Navarre wears a lot of hats as she and her husband raise three daughters in Weatherford. She is a wife, a mom, a former basketball and rodeo standout, coach, teacher, booster club president and I guess you could say business manager.

“I came to Weatherford my senior year of college, played basketball at Southwestern and finished my degree. I met my husband who was on the rodeo team, got married and never left,” she laughed.

“We have three daughters-Shyla who is a senior on the Lady Eagles basketball team this year, Layna who is a freshman and Clara who is in the fourth grade.”

Melissa is a teacher and has coached off and on at various grade levels and at various area schools and coaches all of her girls until they’re playing school ball. She got involved in the high school booster club almost by accident.

“I missed a meeting,” she laughed. “No, not really. We had some parents leave with graduating kids and I was asked to take over and here I am four years later. I feel like we’ve improved the communication between the coaches, the booster club and the school a lot during that time. I’ve been surrounded by good officers who have helped raise the money we need to support our teams, and the business community has really stepped up, particularly for this senior group of boys and girls that have been great to watch.”

And the business manager part?

“The girls have a rodeo business called Flying Arena Stars where they’re hired to go to rodeos and entertain with trick riding,” said Melissa who herself was a trick rider. “They’ve been doing it since each of them was about five years old and last year they were invited to perform at the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas.”

Her advice to parents who might be on the fence about being involved in a booster club.

“Being involved in a booster club is an opportunity to serve and set a good example for your kids. Get a foot in the door early because the time goes by fast and the sooner you get involved, the more you’ll know about what’s going on.”
