Athletes put in a lot of hours of work so that they can be at their best when it comes time to compete on the field or court. Reece Burton says that you have to be willing to do more than everyone else if you want to be successful.
“For me to get where I am today, I have had to outwork others,” he said. “My biggest motivation to keep working hard was winning.”
Burton is a senior at Elk City High School where he is a multi-sport athlete. He plays slotback and safety on the football field, while on the basketball court, he plays forward. On the baseball diamond, he covers things in the outfield.
No matter what sport he is competing in, Reece knows that when he puts on that Elk City uniform, he is playing for more than just himself. He is a representative of his school and community.
“It is important to me to be a positive representation of Elk City,” he said. “It represents winning and a winning culture.”
Burton and his teammates face a number of different opponents throughout each season. But no matter what is going on, there is always one game on the schedule that means a little more to Reece.
“The highlight of my career so far would have to be beating Weatherford,” he recalled. “Anytime we beat them is a good day because they are our biggest rivals.”
There have been a lot of teachers that have taught him over the years, but Burton says that there is one teacher that has made the biggest impact on his life.
“My favorite teacher would have to be coach Mincher,” he said. “He is a really good coach and a great guy.”
His teammates have also played a big role in his growth as a person and as an athlete.
“I think my favorite teammate to go against in practice would have to be Tucker Garza,” Reece said. “We push each other in conditioning and make each other better. Fabian Armedariz is one of the hardest working guys in the weight room.”
